Keywords: Placement and Frequency (Density)
Keywords are used by search engines to help determine the content on your site, however they are not the exclusive way of getting higher rankings, but they do often contribute to them. Keywords are also called 'Meta Description Tags' and are found in the section of you web page content, they look something like <meta name="keywords" content="keywords, keyword, keyword phrase, etc.">
Choosing your KeywordsHow many keywords or phrases should be used is a highly debated topic and a closely guarded secret of the search engines them selves on how they use them to rank pages. The best rule of thumb is to use 10-15 words or phrases seperated by comma's, not spaces. Picking the words is completely up to you, but caution should be given to those that best describe the site and the article of the content in which a person would search for, including the area or region your products or services lie in if applicable.
Placement of Keywords
Placement of your key words should not just lie in your meta description tag of your head section of your site. These words should also be repeated in several locations throughout your site as verification to the search engines that your site actually contains this content. Here are several of areas which are beneficial
- Path or URL
- HTML Title of your page
- Header or footer of your page
- Bold or emphasized header text title (i.e. <h1>, <h2>, <h3>, etc...) of your page
- Actual textual content of your page
- Subsequent paragraph or section headings
- Text of hyperlinks on your page
- Breadcrumbs of your page
- Image alt tags on your page
- Popup tooltips on your page (if applicable)
Frequency (Density) of Keywords
How often should the Keywords be used and just how many of them does it require to get noticed?
This is a tough question and has been disputed by many SEO sites and speculated by just as many about which search engines require what frequency. The best rule of thumb is some where between 3-10% on any page for your site.
